Minutes of the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides’ January 2012 Meeting

The general meeting was called to order by President Bob Skiba at 7:27 February 8, 2012 at the Artful Dodger.

 

1. Last month's minutes were approved by the present membership

 

2. Treasurer: no report

 

3. Events

Feb. 9 Dyottville Glassworks in Fishtown, 19th century commune uncovered during I-95 construction. Contact: Anita McKelvey

Feb. 13, 5:30 pre-opening of Philadelphia History Museum: all APT members are invited

Feb. 22, 6:30, Independence Visitors Center: Pres. Bob will be part of a panel sponsored by The Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia. Theme "The City That Loves You Back," followed by an open discussion

Mar. 7, 5-7:00 Philadelphia's Historic Neighborhood Consortium (PHNC) celebration @ American Revolution Center (101 S. 3rd St). Refreshments, door prizes, Dr.Physick soda. RSVP to Del Conner

Next meeting, March 14th : Bob will speak on Prohibition in Philadelphia

 

4. Lecture Series

"Guide's View of Philadelphia" begins Mon Feb. 27 @ Physick House

Financial Aid is available for lecture series in exchange for volunteer hours for APT. Contact Ed Mauger

Individual courses are $10/each for members who took the course last year, depending on available space (see website for course availability)

--Mike Tait: Get a receipt for the courses: the course is a business expense

Next certification test: Apr 16

5. Communications

Contact Richard Frey to become involved with communications committee

Ed spoke with concierge society to promote the lecture series

 

6. Membership List/TOPS discussion

--TOPS sees our membership list as competition, we need to resolve this issue

--Should we have categories to our membership list?

--Ernest: NY and DC guides can give tours in PHL, but PHL guides cannot give tours in DC or NY

--How are other cities enforcing their certification laws?

--Promote PHL to national tour companies

--Judy: membership in APT is open, members should be listed equally, alphabetically, both guides and tour operators, etc.

--Bob: in progress is  a member's only contact list on website

--Bob: the executive committee will discuss this , then make recommendations to the membership

 

7. Reprinting of handbook

--there will be minor revisions in 2nd edition, ready for the lecture series

--the 3rd printing will consider format changes, larger changes

 

8. Alternate meeting dates and places

--contact Bob with suggestions

--other meeting places? Brian: some members feel pressured to spend $ in the bar/restaurant we meet at.

 

9. Misc.

Nonnie: there should be a page on the website for book recommendations,  member notices etc.

Bob: We need a committee to look at by-law revisions

There is a new Banking History Museum at Broad and Sansom (Wells Fargo Bldg)

Judy Shulman is looking into APT group health insurance

Shirley Turpin Parham passed away on  Feb 8, 2012. A motion was passed to memorialize her on the website
